Honor Our Founders – Value Yourself

Last month, we celebrated Women’s Equality Day. This month, we tackle something that has been off-limits or off-putting for many women business owners—budgeting and financing.

From managing our budgets to planning for our retirement to capitalizing our businesses, far too many women put themselves last or think too small.

But women business owners are a major driver and the fastest growing segment of our nation’s economy. So remember what a vital role you play in the current and future economic conditions we face. We are better and stronger together.

Also, take a moment to remember our NAWBO founding members. NAWBO was founded 40 years ago by a group of women in the Washington, D.C., area who had no one to advocate for them. They could not join any of the business groups at the time. They found that many of their colleagues across the country could not access the capital or information they needed to start a business. In many places, women could not even get their own business loans without a male to co-sign. They set out to change that for themselves and for future generations of women entrepreneurs—and they did.

We can repay and honor them for all their hard work by continuing that today—by not undervaluing ourselves or our fellow women entrepreneurs and encouraging ourselves and others to dream big.

Each time I have heard her talk, she comes up with some gem of a concept that brings an “aha! moment. Aldonna thinks big and encourages others to do the same. She gently nudges you to take the next step, not settle for good when you can attain great; all the while making you feel pride in your accomplishments.”

Ambler is also a long-standing member of NAWBO, having joined in 1980 just five years after it was formed.  She has a long history with the organization and with helping women business owners from all over the United States to succeed.  Ambler was the 5th Statewide President and served as a National Vice President three times.
