Each time I have heard her talk, she comes up with some gem of a concept that brings an “aha! moment. Aldonna thinks big and encourages others to do the same. She gently nudges you to take the next step, not settle for good when you can attain great; all the while making you feel pride in your accomplishments.”

Ambler is also a long-standing member of NAWBO, having joined in 1980 just five years after it was formed.  She has a long history with the organization and with helping women business owners from all over the United States to succeed.  Ambler was the 5th Statewide President and served as a National Vice President three times.

“As business owners we all face challenges,” said Davis. “However, as women business owners we often face challenges that our male counterparts may not such as gender discrimination, the pressures of managing work and family, appropriately valuing our worth in the marketplace, and learning how to be effective leaders while walking the line between being perceived as too aggressive or too nice. The National Association of Women Business Owners is an organization that provides a supportive environment just for women to share the challenges we face and receive the advice and wisdom of those who have gone before us.”

Davis has a multi-varied background that she brings to her new position which includes receiving a MS in Social Psychology, 15+ years in Information Technology designing portal based solutions for corporations to improve their communication and collaboration, and, of course, her experience as a female entrepreneur with The Flavorful Fork.  She is also a columnist for Virtua Woman, has been published in a variety of academic journals, and regularly shares her knowledge and love of food within corporations, at farmers markets, and through other venues.

Women Business Owners Report by NAWBO & Web.com

Nearly nine out of 10 women business owners (87 percent) are optimistic about their business’ economic outlook this year, a 12 percent increase over 2013, finds the 2014 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report commissioned by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), which boasts a local chapter in South Jersey, and Web.com Group, Inc.

The report, developed from an annual survey* of more than 600 women business owners (WBOs) from around the nation, also shows that while the state of the economy is the top concern for most (90 percent) WBOs, the majority (89 percent) are also optimistic about their overall business performance in 2014.

“Our report reveals that women business owners are optimistic about the future of their businesses and the opportunities that exist for other women to start up new businesses as well,” said Angela Venti, President of NAWBO South Jersey.  “At NAWBO, we work hard to ensure that the women business owners and professionals in our community have the skills, tools and support they need to achieve their goals.”

When asked about their biggest near-term concerns over the next six months, the top issue – cited by 90 percent of WBOs – was gaining new customers, and 81 percent are concerned about keeping their existing customers. To address these challenges, WBOs are emphasizing investments in customer service (69 percent) and marketing (62 percent) over enhancing their products (48 percent) or hiring (26 percent).

WBOs also place a higher priority on online marketing in 2014, with a larger focus on investing in their mobile presence (+13 percentage points from 2013), social media presence (+ eight percentage points), ecommerce (+ six percentage points) and website (+ three percentage points). Eighty-five percent of WBOs believe social media is important for creating and maintaining customer relationships, and 79 percent plan to invest in their social media presence in 2014.

The 2014 report also shows:

Taxes, access to health insurance and energy costs are top WBO worries.

In addition to their economic concerns, 80 percent of WBOs are worried about business tax issues, up 12 percent from 2013. As for other issues keeping WBOs up at night this year more than last, 71 percent say the cost and accessibility of health insurance is a significant issue (+ two percentage points); 61 percent cite having access to capital (+ six percentage points); and 51 percent say fuel and energy costs are a concern (+10 percentage points from 2013).

While social media marketing is a priority, WBOs lack confidence in their abilities and vastly underutilize these channels.

While 85 percent of respondents say social media is important for building customer relationships, only 67 percent of respondents currently use social media to connect with customers. That means a significant 18 percentage point gap between recognized importance and actual use of social, which leads to a tremendous missed opportunity. Just more than half (54 percent) of respondents are confident in their ability to build a social media presence for their business, and only a quarter of them are posting on social media at least once a day. Most WBOs (54 percent) are posting one to six times per week, and 23 percent rarely post at all. When they do use social media, WBOs’ preferred platforms are LinkedIn (25 percent), Facebook (21 percent) and YouTube (20 percent).

“Women small business owners recognize the importance of the web, mobile and social media to engage, capture and nurture customer relationships, and they are increasing investments in these resources to drive growth,” said David L. Brown, chairman, CEO and president of Web.com. “However, WBOs face unique challenges in social media, where they lack either the expertise or time to realize the full potential of this channel. Small business owners who prioritize the web and social media in their marketing mix – or find a partner to help them gain this expertise – will reap the benefits of increased customer engagement and satisfaction.”

Deadline Extension for their Feed Your Hunger Video Contest

In response to several requests for more time, The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) of South Jersey is extending the submission deadline for their video contest, titled Feed Your Hunger, to January 25th, 11:59 pm.  The original deadline was January 15th, 11:59 pm.

The Feed Your Hunger contest was created by NAWBO of South Jersey in tribute to the 2014 Beyond the Glass Ceiling Awards Gala keynote speaker, Dr. Robin Smith, a national television personality, best-selling author, and licensed psychologist.  In Dr. Robin Smith’s most recent book, Hungry: The Truth About Being Full, she candidly chronicles her own experiences with being emotionally and spiritually hungry in order to provide insight into the reader’s own hunger.  To honor the courage Dr. Robin Smith displays in her willingness to stand in her own truth and lay it all on the line for the sake of her readers, NAWBO of South Jersey hopes to empower the women in their region to do the same with the Feed Your Hunger contest.

To enter the contest, simply submit a two-minute video via email to cheffran@flavorfulfork.com in which you answer the question, “What are you hungry for?”   The contest is open to all women who live in the South Jersey region.  The submission video can be recorded with a phone or built-in computer camera.  It does not need to look fancy or professionally done.  The submissions will be evaluated solely on the entrants’ answer to the question, “What are you hungry for?”   The NAWBO SJ board will determine the top three submissions and post them to their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/nawbosj, on February 1, 2014, at which time voting will begin.  Voting will end at 11:59 PM on February 15th, 2014.  There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes awarded to the winners of the Feed Your Hungercontest.  The first place prize is a VIP ticket to the Beyond the Glass Ceiling Awards Gala, a signed book by Dr. Robin Smith, a ticket to NAWBO of South Jersey’s March event with Aldonna Ambler, plus a 1:1 session with an expert to help you Feed Your Hunger!  To learn more, visithttp://nawbosouthjersey.org/programs-and-events/glass_cei….

“As Director of Marketing for NAWBO of South Jersey, I have gathered countless quotes from Dr. Robin Smith’s book, Hungry, in order to help promote the awards gala and her keynote address,” said Fran Davis, owner of Flavorful Fork and board member of NAWBO SJ.  “I posted one recently to the NAWBO SJ Facebook page that reminded me about why we decided to hold this contest.   It reads: ‘Hunger comes with being human.  When we are ashamed of our hunger to get our needs met, it is comparable to being ashamed of our humanity.’  There is a stigma associated with the idea of being emotionally, spiritually, or mentally hungry that doesn’t serve us as women in general or in business.  These types of hungers are as natural as physical hunger and should be able to be talked about with the same openness and candor.  I encourage the women of South Jersey to speak out and help put an end to this defeating stigma.”
